Art Friday, an idea by my friend Elizabeth, provided us a fun summer activity a few years ago when I babysat for a summer job. I think Maya was about 3 and the girls I babysat were 9 and 6. We painted, made jewelry, visors with foamies...etc.
Fast forward 2.5 years later. It's time to bring it back. With Maya in half day kindergarten, Laney -an afternoon napper and Mama having Fridays off, it seems perfect for Art Friday to resume at our house. In the most recent Family Fun magazine there was a chilly craft especially for winter. As soon as I saw it, I knew we had to make them!
So- we filled an ice cube tray with water and added food coloring. 4 yellow, 4 red, 4 green and 4 blue.
We let those freeze for most of the day. Then we filled 2 cakepans 2/3's full of water. (Please ignore the messy sink:)
We filled two plastic cups with water and put one in each cake pan so that when it froze, the cups would make a hole. After an hour, we put the colored ice cubes in each cake pan. One pan for blue and green and one pan for red and yellow. About 3 hours later(this was an all day Art Friday project:) we dumped the very cool ice rings out of the cake pans, tied ribbons through each hole(from the plastic cups) and hung our very special ice wreath sun catchers outside! We can hardly wait to see them tomorrow in action as when we hung them it was 8:00 at night and very dark!
